While we're obviously not big fans of Wix's SEO capabilities, we figured their analytics set up would be okay.
Well, we were wrong.
While Wix has their own analytics tool, they do allow you to embed third-party tracking code on your website, for digital analytics platforms such as Google Analytics and Crazy Egg.
Wix may be pulling a fast one on some small business owners who are unaware of Google Analytics, a free website analytics tool that can give you very detailed insights about your website visitors … but we'll get to that later.
Wix has a free Visitor Analytics tool (from the Wix App Market) that you can add to your site to get basic website reporting. This gives you some baseline metrics like the number of visitors and pageviews, your website bounce rate, and a pie chart featuring the different pages that were visited.
But … That's about it.
If you wanted to see demographics of your website visitors like gender, age groups or regions – too bad.
If you wanted to see what resources a user downloaded or which videos they viewed on your site – sorry, try again.
If you wanted to see what social media or PPC campaigns are sending the most relevant visitors to your site –
Now, I know what you're probably thinking … "but it's a free tool, why would it have advanced capabilities" Just stay with me, I'm getting there.
Wix has an upgraded version of this app that you can buy for $5.99 a month, but PLEASE do not pay for that. The additional insight is not worth the $70 a year.
- Visitor Overview
- Map of where visitors were located
- Number of visitors by country and city
- Number of visitors by month, day or hour
- Number of unique visitors per device, operating system browser and screen resolution
- Page Overview
- Count of visits per page
- Count of which landing page users started on
- Page view conversion tracking
- List of referring sites
While this may all sound all fine and dandy to someone who's not tech-savvy, don't be fooled, Google Analytics gives you all this and more, for FREE.
Setting up Google Analytics (GA) should take no longer than 5 minutes. It's just a matter of signing up for GA and then connecting the two using Wix's marketing integrations. Honestly, if you can set up your Netflix account correctly, you can do this.
In addition to everything Wix can report on, these are just a few of my favorite free features of using Google Analytics:
- Event and goal tracking
- Page speed analysis
- Organic search insights
- Site search insights
- Age and gender demographics
- Location and language overview
- Real&ndaash;time information about traffic sources, locations, and pages being viewed
Now, I may be a little biased being a Web Analyst, but I would never pay for Wix's premium analytics capabilities and you shouldn't either.
As all experts know, SEO is not just about the work you put in, but also reporting, providing insights, and making strategic adjustments. To not only prove your worth to clients, but to also discover opportunities for improvement, you need accurate and in–depth reporting.
Wix's Visitors Analytics App (either the free or premium version) gives you the basics. Sure, you can track changes in traffic volume, obtain some basic demographic and device information, and get a slight feel of user engagement/experience, but that's not enough. With Google Analytics, you can do all that and more. If you want to run a successful SEO campaign while saving money, ditch Wix's Visitor Analytics App and stick with GA.
If you have used Wix's platform, we want to hear your thoughts! Please leave a review and let us know what you love or hate about Wix's SEO!
